HISTORY

History

Diamond Island Resort is built around the home constructed in 1856 by one of Bicheno’s first free settlers, John Allen.

Allen was the original land grant owner for Bicheno.

The ‘1856 Homestead’ as we call it, housed John and his family for many years and after John died in 1879, his wife Ann ran the home as a guest house until her demise in 1926.

This same homestead is now (the centrepiece of) a 26-villa waterfront hotel and Resort with spa retreat and fabulous ‘1856’ Bar & Bistro.

The original Homestead is still intact in the middle of the Resort – and on request, the guests can view the original staircase built by John for his family in 1856.

The Resort today accommodates people from all over the world. With our co-inhabitants, the Little Penguins, we extend to all our guests a private Penguin Tour on the Resort property, included in every Villa package. With our private beach access and ocean views from all villas – we truly are in ‘paradise’.

We offer conferencing facilities for all events, from weddings to corporate meetings as well as spiritual retreats. The versatility of our spaces – conference room, ‘1856’ Bar & Bistro, main building, large decks and gardens – allows for any event or special occasion to be designed specifically to suit. We can sleep 106 guests on any night on site.

Every night of the year, our friends, the Little Penguins come back from the Ocean and into their burrows. The Little Penguins live synonymously with the Resort Guests and many have been lucky enough to find out that if they stay very still, the penguins will walk between your legs!

Most guests find our private Penguin tour to be a great way to finish off their evening after dinner before heading back to their villa.

The most wonderful part about Diamond Island Resort is that we welcome all guests to come and enjoy our facilities and join the Penguin viewing.

Come along and have dinner in our ‘1856’ Bar & Bistro and enjoy all that this beautiful location has to offer.
