ATTRACTIONS

Whether visiting Diamond Island Resort on an East Coast Tasmanian road trip or on a short stay holiday, the town of Bicheno is a fascinating look to early Australian history and caters for everybody – from those looking for adventure to those who just want a relaxing time by the ocean.

The town itself is an old coal mining town and also was home to fishers and whalers. It still is a fishing hotspot, with local seafood one of the culinary delights you can find through the town.

Humpback Whales, as they make their annual migration to and from Antarctica, make a stunning sight breaching just off the beaches of Bicheno.

Fishing boat tours are a popular pastime leaving from Bicheno, or you can throw a line in from the beach. Bicheno’s Glass Bottom Boat allows you to see the many sea creatures just off the coast, including crayfish, lobster and many other species of underwater life.

A popular attraction is East Coast Natureworld. Here, you can see the remnants of the Douglas River Coal Mine, which was founded in 1849 and manned by Convicts – who built tram tracks from the mine to the Port to ship out the coal.

Natureworld is home to many native animals, including the Tasmanian Devil. Nightly, the ‘Devils in the Dark feeding exhibition allows guests to see Tasmania’s native marsupial up close in its natural habitat. Bookings are required through its website and door-to-door transportation can be provided by Natureworld.

The old Bicheno Court and Gaol House (built 1845) are still standing in town and the Bicheno Blowhole is a popular tourist attraction. Within a comfortable day trip, visitors to Bicheno can visit the Freycinet or Coles Bay wine districts and daily door-to-door wine tours, including tastings can be arranged with pickup from Diamond Island Resort.
